THE CHARACTER

Character Name: Aranea Highwind
Series: Final Fantasy XV
Canon Point: Post Episode Prompto
Character Age: 30
Background: Here Aranea's Wiki!

Personality:

Hey, pretty boy.

Upon first introduction, Aranea is presented as an enemy. She's a snarky foe that gives Noctis and company a run for their money with an epic ass boss battle. In reality, once the fight nears its completion, Aranea's personality can be summed up rather nicely as she stops everything abruptly: I don't work after hours. In truth, Aranea is someone trying to make a buck. Long are the years that she's been involved in mercenary work and tasked with her own squadron, Aranea follows orders initially because it pays well. This insight is the first show that morality is a gray area for her, instead trying to keep herself sustained. This isn't life or death to her — it's a living and there's tons of jobs out there for her to take.

Aranea is armed with more than a giant spear, as her sultry nature eases tension and allows Noctis and company to truly trust her later on in the game. Aranea shows no dedication to bringing them down or cause further problems, preferring to make less of a headache for everyone. To her, cutting the bullshit and doing what's necessary is the easiest path (and one she often takes).

Confidence drips from the woman even when there's doubt — she has a power in her choices that not a lot of people do. Be it from seeing daemons or experiencing the front lines of war, she instead chooses to respond in sassy quips instead of anger. Aranea isn't one to take a side for long — not unless she knows it favors her own goals in the long run. When she begins to doubt the long-term efforts of Niflheim's army, she is able to pull her trusted men out and defect for the greater good. These choices, while dangerous, are both self-serving and even "good-natured".

Her morality is certainly gray when she is introduced, following no code of ethics - just a need for cash. However, she isn't completely selfish. There's still a line she won't cross. She has enough common sense to realize when a situation is bad and if she should bail. An example is her relationship with the Empire. Disagreeing so much with the use of daemons and political bullshit, Aranea begins to weigh the good she could do in that position versus the reality on if she would be able to do good at all. A realist, she bows out when she realizes the Empire is too far gone with their propaganda and what they initially toted was for the good of the population.

Ultimately, Aranea's strong-will keeps her going and makes sure her job never goes unfinished. While it's easy to perceive that Aranea doesn't care about much outside of her own goals, as the game progresses, it shows she balances obligation to the job she is hired for with common sense. Aranea continues on, and no matter what the circumstances are, she refuses to count herself down and out. Adapting to what life throws, if she doesn't like the game being played, she either stops playing or plays better. That being said, Aranea is quite the vocal lady and offers advice when needed, sometimes even when it isn't. It's less about being helpful and more-so being the slap of reality someone needs. She is quick to call Noctis and company out on complicating things, offering advice that if there's something they want, they should go for it. Similarly, she is shown in Episode Prompto to literally grab and shake Prompto to get him out of his funk, giving the harsh truths he needs to hear when no one else is there to say them.

Aranea hates wasting her time moping and dragging things on, which leads to her being a realist. When shit gets bad, she has no problem calling it out as such. What she does have problems with is any self-pitying that halts the action. Aranea's blunt attitude can come across as abrasive and bitchy, but when paired with the sly twist of her words, it contains less of a bite. She is quick to say what needs to be said and will happily call an ace an ace. There's no room for any subtle or delicate delivery with the way she speaks — even when tensions may be high. Aranea hates to remain idle, always on the go figuratively and/or literally. This combined with her leadership and dedication to those close to her makes her an awesome person to be paired up with — if you can get past the snarky attitude.

She is shown to align herself with people easily, but still keeps her personal life hidden. Alliances and loyalties go far with her, but as mentioned, she can drop them if it becomes too much of a burden on her. From her exposure in the game, Biggs and Wedge (her subordinates) hold her in high regard and trust her to do the best for their team. She's shown that even if she can have a selfish streak, she isn't willing to just throw people under the bus.

The woman does have a way with words, however. When not fighting and actually talking to Aranea, she comes off as very likeable. She's a mix of snark, flirtation, and teasing. These traits come out often when she plays with Noctis and company, particularly when they're on good terms. Her abrasive side may come out quite often, but it becomes watered down when Aranea is in company of friends and allies.

Aranea follows her own judgment and leads herself with a confidence not many have. Armed with her ferocious battle skills and sly attitude, she is a force to be reckoned with.

Powers/Abilities:

LEADERSHIP: Be it her position as Commodore or her role later in the game as a mercenary trying to help refugees, Aranea likes her freedom. She's able to command others and show fairly decent (and morally just) choices in a position of leadership. Despite her reluctance to work for free or indulge in mushy do-good deeds, she isn't that bad of a person.

COMBAT: Aranea's fighting speciality is focused on aerial moves and offensive attacks with a spear. As someone who was hand-picked as Commodore of the Third Army Corps 87th Airborne Unit, she is someone with extreme combat knowledge. Particularly close-range fighting, Aranea is a fearsome foe in battle. Her most notable move is the Highwind in which she leaps into the air and slams her spear down for a devastating blow. This brings me to...

AGILITY & FIGHTING STYLE: As her last name indicates, Highwind's are a repeating lancer/dragoon-based character in the Final Fantasy series. Aranea is no different. She is very athletic, agile, and capable of using momentum in her favor. As a dragoon, she is capable of propelling herself to extreme heights for aerial battling. This allows her to not only maintain herself mid-air between slices and dices, but able to impact the ground from great heights to catch her foes off guard. There's no clear explanation for it, but there are theories that it is based upon Magitek armor — specifically her boots. Being able to be not only fast and quick, Aranea is shown to have a decent amount of stamina in battles.

RECON: As a former mercenary, Aranea is capable of going on missions that require a flexible skillset. She is shown being able to traverse snowy wilderness landscapes, fight against ferocious monsters, and recon areas before for intel. This is a skillset that is more passive and reflects nicely upon her battle-heavy role.

Power Nerfs (if applicable): Nothing really, they're all pretty tame...

Inventory:
- Her dragoon armour (with helmet)
- Stoss Spear — a giant spear that is shown to technically appear/reappear like most Final Fantasy XV weapons. If needed, can nerf the disappearing aspect of it.

Incentives:
- A nice paycheck.
- Ardyn Izunia's head on a platter.
- Confidence boost for Final Fantasy XV's boyband.
- Her own airship.
